The best papers presented at the Seminar by members will receive for prizes awarded by CST, MAGNESITA and SIEMENS VAI, their technical contributions being published in the “Tecnologia em Metalurgia e Materiais” magazine, to be published in 2007.

The Technical Steelmaking Division has the pleasure to present the official program for the XXXVII Steelmaking Seminar - International, to be held from May 21st. through 24th., 2006 at the Centro de Eventos Plaza São Rafael, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).
Capital city of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, with nearly 1.4 million inhabitants, Porto Alegre is a vibrant, politicized city, having hosted the first meeting of the World Social Forum. It is also one of the 10 best cities to work in Brazil, according to a survey jointly conducted by Você S/A magazine and FGV – Getúlio Vargas Foundation.
On Sunday, the 21st., in addition to the courses on “Applications of computational thermodynamics in steelmaking” and “The continuous casting mold and steel quality”, given by Prof. Dr. André Luiz Vasconcellos da Costa e Silva and Prof. Dr. Brian G. Thomas, respectively, the program includes lectures given by former Brazilian ex-minister Maílson da Nóbrega and the director of Gerdau Group, José Paulo Soares Martins.
On the other days, the lectures and technical sessions will cover themes such as Environment, Steel and Refractories Manufacturing Processes, among others, and a roundtable on "The brazilian and latin american steelmaking in the world context".

A city that “adds energies”, stands out among hills and plains, by the Guaíba lake. The Guaíba is fed by four great rivers, and continues on to form the Patos Lagoon, the biggest in Brazil, 250 kilometers long 50 kilometers wide.
Upon arrival, the newcomer senses “something” in the air, along the streets, the sunsets, the spontaneous glee with which the city seduces and involves. A place for labour and pleasure, it has around it more than 13 districts, forming a significant Metropolitan Region and the greenest capital in Brazil. Reflected on the waters of the Guaíba river, modern industries, universities, hospitals which are reference centers, stadiums, squares and avenues, swimming and boating clubs, shopping malls, a varied and multicolored architecture, modern districts and fashion shops, bohemian and fancy districts, cafes, restaurants, nooks in its refined European style, contrasting with the outskirt farms, sweet water beaches, and more.
One can hardly believe that all this only began around the 1730s, when pioneer farmers settled in Viamão to raise cattle.
