The CALPHAD is the most important world-wide meeting in the area of computational thermodynamics.
It is an annual international event, that has taken place, without interruption, since 1973.
In 1973 Larry Kaufman and Himo Ansara sent the invitation to what would be the first CALPHAD meeting:
"We believe that substantial progress can be made in a short period of time if we could arrange to work together for one week at one of our facilities to define problems, disband, carry out some individual activities and meet again for a week at a second facility to compare results and chart future activities"
The year of 2011 will mark the 40th edition of the CALPHAD conference.
The Official language of the Conference is English.
Call for papers
The design of industrial processses requires reliable thermodynamic data.
CALPHAD (Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry) aims to promote computational thermodynamics to support the development of tools and calculations that may improve the understanding of various industrial and technological processes. This work is disseminated through the CALPHAD Annual Conference and CALPHAD Journal.
Contributions of high quality in the fields of thermodynamic modeling, first- principles calculations, experimental measurements of thermochemical and phase equilibrium data, phase tranformations, as well as their applications to process and materials design and development, are welcomed.
Conference Subjects
1) Applications to process and materials design and development
2) CALPHAD assessments
3) Database development
4) Diffusion and phase transformation modeling
5) Experimental measurements
6) First principle calculations
7) Modeling and fundamental aspects
8) Nanomaterials
9) Software development
Recommendation
The recommended transportation from the International Airport (GIG-Galeão- Antonio Carlos Jobim) to Hotel Intercontinental - the CALPHAD venue (30km distance)- is the COOPERTRAMO “radio-taxi”. Upon exiting the customs area there are taxi counters. Go to the COOPERTRAMO counter (it will have the CALPHAD logo on its window) and identify yourself as a CALPHAD participant going to the Intercontinental (São Conrado). The special rate (already 10% discounted) is BRL 108,00. You can pay with credit card or cash at the counter. Take your voucher to the curb and you will be assigned one of their cars with air conditioning.

Rio de Janeiro City

When it comes to looking for a venue for your congress, convention, fair, exhibition or incentive trip, Rio is a great choice. According to ICCA ¬ International Congress and Convention Association, Rio de Janeiro has been in the 1st place in the America's ranking, for eight years, as a destination for international meetings, and among the top 10 or 20 several times.
27,000 hotel rooms with an estimated increase of 2,000 over the next few years make the choice even more viable. New investments are constantly being made in the hotel sector, with hotels available ranging from the most famous international chains to excellent national hotels. These are concentrated mainly in the South Zone, Barra and the downtown area, catering for all possible professional and personal tastes, with infrastructure up to international standards. Many of these hotels have excellent convention centers, with facilities for handling events with up to 2,200 participants.
Culture and Infraestructure
One of the largest cultural and economic centers in South America, Rio de Janeiro welcomes annually around two million tourists from all over the world, maintaining its position as the Brazilian city most visited by foreigners. Famous for picture postcard views known all over the planet, such as Copacabana Beach, the Sugar Loaf mountain and the statue of Christ, this latter one of the seven New Wonders of the World, the city is benefiting from some revitalization of its tourist attractions. An example of this is the historic and bohemian borough of Lapa. Visited at night by practically all visitors who set foot in Rio, new bars, restaurants and cultural centers are being added to increase entertainment and enjoyment.
During the day and out in the open, Rio offers much more than the 90 kilometers of beaches. One of the most visited attractions both by foreigners and Brazilians is the Botanical Gardens, 1.4 million square meters of green, where around five thousand species of plants and tropical trees are grown. In the Tom Jobim Space, all his work can be studied, while enjoying a complete musical program. There are many other attractions in the city for lovers of nature, including the Tijuca National Park, the largest urban forest in the world, and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
Airlines
Rio's International Airport is located on Ilha do Governador, which has excellent access to Rio's south zone where most of the major hotels are located. The airport is served by 26 international carriers as well as the three major Brazilian airlines and, between them, they offer direct flights to and from more than 70 international cities and most of Brazil. A shuttle service operates between Rio and Sao Paulo from Rio's smaller, city center airport, Santos Dumont. An efficient taxi and bus service links the international airport with the main hotels and residential areas.
Arriving & Departing
Arrival to Rio de Janeiro will predominantly be by long haul flight, arriving into Galeao International (code GIG), whose official name is Tom Jobim. Rio also has a smaller domestic/short haul airport called Santos Dumont (SDU). When arriving from Europe it's worth noting most airlines will go to Guarulhos International (GRU) at Sao Paulo firstly.
You will have 4 (four options to get to downtown Rio and the beaches. Bus, pre-paid taxi, regular taxis (metered), and new on-line transfer services based on schedule.
