Coordinators message

Once again we have the satisfaction and the responsibility of holding the first event of ABM’s calendar year.

We must recognize that, in 2009, at the height of the crisis, our challenge was considerably more difficult. This year, all indicators, whether production, consumption or investments, are quite positive.

This whole motivation comes attached to an additional responsibility of meeting the enthusiastic demands for technical information from traditional steel producers, newcomers to the industry, engineering companies, technology and equipment suppliers, consultants and students, all of them somehow involved with metallurgy in Brazil.

Even if the marketplace shows signs of recovery, the current demand is characterized by new standards of reduced prices, and by an offer more and more globalized and highly competitive.

In this current scenario, nobody can afford not being up-to-date.

Our call, the raw material and natural resources, is not effective in the final products if it is not handled with the appropriate technology when processed. Therefore, the high level of knowledge of the industry’s personnel can become more and more an important differential. ABM’s activities aim at cooperating for such purpose.

Electric stellworks and oxygen steelmaking, secondary metallurgy and solidification / casting will be object of technical discussions in the 41st Steelmaking Seminar through 79 works to be presented, lectures, exhibitions and technical visits.

Opening the activities scheduled, it is worth emphasizing the delivery of the course ‘Mould fluxes - How do they work and how to use them?’, to be conducted by Professor Kenneth C. Mills, from the Department of Materials of the Imperial College of London. Other outstanding point is the roundtable for debating the subject ‘Human resources needs and talent retention in the steel industry’, a subject of general interest, at this moment of economic recovering in particular.

The location, Resende, southern of the State of Rio de Janeiro, has concentrated large investments in the metallurgy industry. Additionally to the plants of traditional producers, CSN and Gerdau, new Votorantim and CSA steel plants rank the area in an outstanding position concerning the production of steel in the Country.

Showing our appreciation to ABM’s Board of Directors for the special support and to all team members who collaborated for this event to take place, we welcome everybody and hope you enjoy an excellent seminar.

Aristidis Betzios and Wilson Ferreira Souza.
