May
24th. to  27th.,  2009 - Sede da ABM - São Paulo - Brazil

OFFICIAL
  PROGRAM

COORDINATORS MESSAGE

Just one year ago, at Steelmaking Seminar, we caught a glimpse of great investments in the national iron and steel industry, which was intending to double its installed capacity of production of raw steel.

Today, according to data published by IBS, we verify the average production in the first quarter did not exceed 50% in relation to the same period in the last year.

It is not just a turbulence period anymore, but a new reality in the steel market with reduction in the levels of demand and prices, followed by an increase in competition of imported goods. This situation is much more globalized than local.

However, with no pseudo-optimism, Brazil may begin to see a more positive future, compared to other regions that produce steel. We cannot forget our natural vocation in the iron and steel industry, high competitiveness of raw materials and natural resources, besides the high level of expertise of the personnel of the sector. Additionally, we can see that Brazilian economy shows some stability.

In that mood, the 40th Steelmaking Seminar is going to take place.

The alternatives for the competitive production of steel, aiming at surviving to low-demand periods, and the options to face the external competition when the market is hot are essential questions during this challenging moment.

Thus, our proposal is discussing the optimization of the existing plants and providing technological solutions so as to make new units feasible, with the major goal of reducing costs in steel production.

The state-of-the-art in melting and solidification equipment, alternative of metallic charge, and optimization of consumptions, besides other technical contributions, are to be presented by experts in the 12 technical sessions of the event.

The program includes debates on the market of steel products, starting with an opening lecture about “Current panorama and perspectives of Brazilian steel industry” as envisioned by IBS.

The theme “Perspectives of steel industry in Brazil” is also object of a round-table, with the participation of representatives of the major steel producers of the Country. In the second
round-table, the theme “Customer’s vision about steel quality” shows the expectations and requirements of the main sectors consumers of steel, such as the automobiles industry, machinery and equipment, electronics, metallic structures and others.

It is worthy to stress out the relevance of this Seminar has been annually confirmed with the attendance of the major technical authorities in steel mills in Brazil and surrounding Countries, besides the attendance of owners of process and equipment technology and input suppliers.

We thank the ABM Board for the special support and the members of the team that have collaborated for the accomplishment of this event, and welcome everybody, wishing you all enjoy a great seminar.

SÃO PAULO
Beautiful, rich, intellectual, democratic, upbeat, sporty, cultural, sentimental, romantic, modern, serious, extroverted, professional. After all, what could define São Paulo? There is no single adjective that could precisely describe what this world-renowned megacity is about.

Forged from a multiplicity of nationalities, cultures, beliefs, philosophies and ideals, this great pioneering metropolis is truly cosmopolitan, both by vocation and by choice. It’s Italian, German, Jewish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chnese, French, African, Arab, Spanish, Latino, Brazilian, Paulistano. These and so many other facets are present in the architecture of the buildings, the streets, the refined tastes of the city’s culinary delights and in the styles and mannerisms of a people who never stop, day after day valiantly writing the story of the city.

The grandeur of São Paulo can be described in many ways.  Highlights include the largest network of hotels in Latin America, the most complete hospital infrastructure and the greatest collection of cultural offerings in Brazil. It is considered one of the international capitals for gastronomy, a consolidated destination for large-scale events, fairs and exhibits renowned around the world, and is home to distinguished academic and research centers, and so much more.

The São Paulo State capital is one of few places where modernity and history coexist harmoniously.  Illustrious events took place in the city involving from Brazilian Independence to political, cultural revolutions and pro-democracy protests. It is home to hundreds of cinemas, museums, theaters, historical-cultural heritage sites, parks, performance halls, theme parks, restaurants, bars, hotels, events spaces, fairs, shopping centers and specialized shopping districts.

Each year, about 10 million visitors come to the city to generate business opportunities or network with professionals, go shopping or even enjoy a wide range of cultural options in sync with what’s happening in the rest of the world.  Being in São Paulo is to experience an around-the-clock metropolis with a lifestyle that combines work and leisure activities as though they were two sides of the same coin.  Capital of a state the size of the United Kingdom, with a population similar to Spain’s, and generating almost half of Brazil’s economic output, the City of São Paulo has become the country’s foremost tourism destination.  This is why we proudly invite you to:
