Vitória
A city founded over 450 years ago, with many stories to tell.
Vitória, the beautiful capital city of the state of Espírito Santo, has a lot to show. It is the third oldest city in Brazil, and was founded on September 8th, 1551, soon after Recife (1548) and Salvador (1549). According to historian José Teixeira de Oliveira, even before that date there was Villa de Victória, a village located at the old Ilha de Santo Antônio, which was known as Vila Nova (New Village) for some time, as opposed to Vila Velha (Old Village), as the former capital of the state of Espírito Santo was called.
During its first 300 years, Vitória was a harbor-village, and fought the French, the British and the Dutch who came after brazilwood and sugar. It was politically emancipated on February 24th, 1823, when an imperial executive order established Vitória as a city.
Geography
Vitória is one of the three capital-islands in Brazil (the other ones are Florianópolis and São Luiz). It is located in the Southeastern region, the most developed region in Brazil. It has a strategic location, near major urban centers, and it is an average of one hour away from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte.
The city of Vitória is made up by an archipelago with 34 isles and a continental part. Its total area is 104,260,787 km2, considering the major island (called Ilha de Vitória), the continental land, all coastal, ocean and estuarine isles of Trindade and Martin Vaz. Originally, the city had over 50 isles, but many of them were already incorporated to the major island through landfills.
