CORROSION

Coordinator: Luiz Cláudio Cândido - UFOP

Scope:
Corrosion phenomenon occurs spontaneously on metallic materials, under different mechanisms. This way, costs related to metallic structures maintenance, repair, and protection are very high (the cost may reach circa 5% of a country’s GDP). Knowing the characteristics of the metal/environment system is important for a good understanding of the degrading effects of corrosion. This subject area approaches the different corrosion types and mechanisms, as well as protection techniques (for metallic linings, inorganic non-metallic linings, organic non-metallic linings, – such as paints and polymers – corrosion inhibitors, anodic protection, cathodic protection, etc.), and project specification and material selection, aiming to minimize corrosion effects. Case studies and assays about corrosion shall be presented. This way, this subject area receives a large number of papers from several researchers and students, as well as from industry professionals.

PHASE DIAGRAMS
Coordinator: André Luiz V. Costa e Silva - IBQN/UFF

Scope:
This subject area relates to phase balance in materials, ranging from experimental measurements aiming the determination of balance and thermodynamic data, calculation and representation of phase balance, to the application of phase balance knowledge. The balancing processes and the usage of balance information for studying such processes are also within the scope of this subject area. Special emphasis shall be given to materials design, development, processing and production, as well as solving their related problems. This subject area focuses in contributions which involve theoretical and practical issues of the usage of thermodynamics or phase diagrams to metallurgy and materials, as well as those concerned to the modelling of phase transitions in materials.

FRACTURE MECHANICS AND STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
Coordinator: Leonardo Barbosa Godefroid - UFOP

Scope:
This year, Seminário de Mecânica de Fratura e Integridade Estrutural (Seminar on Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity) reaches its 12th consecutive edition. This Seminar is well known in industry and academic fields and aims to gather professionals working on the mechanical behavior of materials, specially on mechanical maintenance, structural design and product quality control areas. Papers about theoretical and practical aspects are presented. They are related to the following topics: fracture strength, fatigue, yielding, stress corrosion, failure analysis, modeling and laboratory techniques.

PHYSICAL METALLURGY
Coordinator: Roberto Ribeiro de Avillez - PUC-RJ

Scope:
The papers submitted to the Physical Metallurgy subject area shall approach aspects related to the interactions among microstructure, properties, applications, and material synthesis and processing, highlighting theoretical fundamentals and its correlations. This subject area is not restricted to metals, because physical-chemical fundamentals are the same to all classes of materials. Articles which correlate at least three of the above mentioned areas are particularly important, because they can contribute in a meaningful way to improve quality in material applications, synthesis or processing.

TRIBOLOGY (FRICTION, WEAR, AND LUBRICATION)
Coordinator: Giuseppe Pintaúde - CEFET-PR

Scope:
Tribology (friction, wear, and lubrication) subject area shall consist of a privileged forum for presentation and discussion of scientific and technologic advances, as well as case studies, aiming to increase knowledge and usage of materials, surface treatments, and linings for applications related to Tribology – specially wear. Papers about all aspects of Tribology are welcome: fundamental studies, development of Tribologic materials, analysis and development techniques for tribologic assays, instrumentation for Tribology, usage of wear as a manufacturing process and case studies targeting industrial practices. National and international interaction and collaboration between researchers and industry is expected.
