The lecture's aim is to discuss the following topics: The use of metallic materials and their corrosion, the need to employ coatings and the different types of coatings. For this purpose, the concepts of paintings and paints, the nature of protection through the use of paints and paint pellicle formation, will be developed. In this context, we will also discuss the polymerization process, paint composition in terms of pellicle formation substances, pigments, dyes and additives, solvents and dispersants.
The nature of adherence in the painting and the factors which contribute for the success of a painting will be reviewed. We will also discuss the preparation and cleaning operations of metallic surfaces, aiming at their conditioning for application of the paints, with the use of mechanical and chemical processes. General information about the paint application methods, followed by drying and curing will be seen. The painting quality will be discussed regarding defects presented after the application. Finally, the anticorrosive painting cost will be reviewed.
